Art & Artifact - The Photographic Center

My post graduation ‘european adventure’ took me to Leerdam, a small city in the center of Holland where they still make glass the traditional way, by hand. It was there that I had the opportunity to learn and practice this dying craft as apprentice to both Dutch and Czech glass masters.

I was taught the old-fashioned way - a very ‘hands-on’ education; always working twice as hard as the only female in a traditionally male profession.

As a glass blower I learned that good technique is vital to creating a quality piece. As a glass artist I believe the glass deserves a bit more freedom.

I try to capture the idea of both form and freedom in my pieces while maintaining the fluid nature of the glass. At 2400 degrees the glass is a liquid. As a glass blower I find the glass to be most beautiful when it is hot and moving at the end of my pipe - it’s reactions changing every moment as it cools. As a glass artist, I do my best to preserve that amazing quality in the finished piece.
